History and Heartbreak at the First Day of Competition

So far, there have been many successes at the Rio Olympics, but this does not mean that the Games were not faced with challenges.

After the first day of competition, Australia and Hungary each had two gold medals, leading the world. The US had one gold medal and four silver medals at the end of the day. Virginia Thrasher won the country’s first gold medal at this Olympics at the women’s 10m air rifle competition. Three of the four silver medals went to swimmers for the men’s 400m individual medley, the women’s 400m individual medley, and the women’s 4x100m freestyle. The other silver medal went to the men’s archery team.[1]

Several world records were beaten during yesterday’s competition. Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu broke the world record for the 400m individual medley, and the Australian swimming team beat the world record for the 4x100m freestyle relay.[2] In addition, Adam Peaty beat his own world record in the 100m breaststroke.[3]

The USA basketball team won its first game against China yesterday with a score of 119-62. This is the biggest win for the American team during the first game of the Olympics since 1992. The team will play Venezuela tomorrow evening.[4]

Despite these successes, the first day of competition saw several challenges. A French gymnast named Samir Ait Said broke his leg during the vault yesterday. As he was being taken away on a stretcher, the attendants dropped it as he was being taken into the ambulance. He had suffered a similar injury on his other leg at the 2012 European Championship, which caused him to miss the Olympics that year. In addition, German gymnast Andreas Toba tore his anterior cruciate ligament during the floor exercise.[5]

Another problem facing the Olympics yesterday was the long lines in front of the venues. Visitors were in line for several hours at multiple events. The Rio 2016 Olympic Organizing Committee’s spokesperson stated that they are working to speed up the security checkpoint process and that the problem causing the delays is the poor coordination between security agencies and Olympic officials.[6]

In addition, a stray bullet was fired into the media booth at the equestrian arena. Brazilian military and police called this “an unfortunate incident.” A military-looking bullet went through the roof of the tent and landed on the floor. The event was not affected, and nobody was hurt in the incident. The bullet was not intended to hit the event, and it was a stray bullet.[7]

Another problem at the Games yesterday was a controlled explosion at the finish line at the men’s cycling road event. Like the incident at the equestrian arena, the event continued unaffected, and nobody was hurt. The explosion was controlled and came from an unattended bag.[8]

There were many challenges during the first day of competition, but there were also many successes.
