Celebrating Spain’s Successes

Although Spain is not high on the Olympic medal leaderboard, it has been having a successful Olympics in Rio.

Swimmer Mireia Belmonte Garcia won Spain’s first-ever women’s Olympics swimming gold medal in the 200m butterfly. In addition, her time for this race was the fastest this year. She also won a bronze medal in the 400 individual medley, which was also a first for Spain in any sport. Belmonte Garcia won two silver medals at the 2012 London Olympics in the 200m butterfly and the 800m freestyle.[1]

Spain’s Olympic basketball team beat the previously undefeated Lithuania team with a score of 109-59. Now, they only need to beat Argentina to get to the knockout round. Spain’s team is the back-to-back silver medal winner, and its size and skill level is only beaten by the United States.[2]

Rafael Nadal and Marc Lopez won gold in men’s doubles tennis by beating the Romanian team in three sets. This is Nadal’s second Olympic gold medal, after he won one for men’s singles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In addition, Nadal won the singles semifinal match, which means that if he wins two more matches, he will win an unprecedented second singles gold medal.[3]

Spain’s team has also faced some struggles despite their Olympic successes. For example, swimmer Miguel Duran Navia dove too early in the 400m freestyle preliminary heat, which would normally result in a disqualification. However, he received a reprieve but still placed seventh.[4] In addition, equestrian Severo Jurado Lopez did not medal in the individual dressage competition, despite winning over the crowd. He placed in fifth, and the crowd booed the judges for not giving him a higher score.[5]

So far, Spain has had a successful Olympics despite a couple stumbles.
