Two weeks ago on May 7th, the reigning NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo’s twitter was hacked by a 16 year-old from the U.K. Some of the inappropriate tweets included the coronavirus and other NBA superstars, such as LeBron James and Steph Curry.
One of the first to announce the account was hacked was Giannis’s brother Kostas who also plays in the NBA.
The Hacker was identified due to his boastful attitude on his discord server as 16 year-old Christian Boulton. It’s unclear why he targeted Giannis and decided to send out malicious tweets. Some of the tweets can be found here. Be warned they are extraordinarily NSFW.
Giannis regained control of his account Thursday night and issued an apology for the obscene tweets earlier that day. He wrote “The tweets and posts were extremely inappropriate and I am so dissapointed and disgusted that somebody would say the terrible things that were said!”
This hack shows us why two-factor authentication is so important in today’s social media landscape.
