Liamin and Barsouk of Russia shockingly upset Pedro and Evandro of Brazil in match three, 15 to 10. Russia, ranked 23rd in the tournament beat the number 4 ranked team, Brazil, who had home field advantage and the crowd on their side. Pedro is known for having the absolute best jump serve in the game… when he is on his game. Unfortunately for Brazil Pedro was not able to connect very well in the three matches with Russia.
Three weeks ago when Liamin and Barsouk found out that they were heading to Rio they were skeptical about their chances of success in Rio due to their older age and level of competition at the games. As they head into the quarter finals of the men’s beach volleyball, the two know they have a long way to go and along the way they will face many talented athletes. However, if the Russian duo can continue to play fundamentally solid volleyball they have a chance, especially after defeating arguably the best team in
the tournament. Although many Russian athletes have been banned from competing in the 2016 games for performance enhancing drugs, Nikita Liamin and Dmitri Barsouk are hopeful to bring home some hardware back to Mother Russia and remind the world that Russia is still one of the great competitors in the Olympics.
