Teaming for Protecting the Culture of Sports

The Benefits of Joining

Protecting the teams and their athletes from cybersecurity attacks is one of the key benefits of participating in an Information Sharing and Analysis Organization (ISAO).

Adopting a traditional strategy of leveraging sport as an instrument to deliver social change, the Cyber Resilience Institute (CRI) was the primary sponsor of a proof-of-concept (POC) that was delivered during 2016. FemaleSportsIn this case, the desired social change was for sector-based (Sport) and community-based adoption of cyber threat intelligence and information sharing through an ISAO that had been formed with the support of the Cyber Threat Intelligence Network (CTIN).

The POC pilot to support American involvement in the Summer Olympics provided a highly visible and attractive scenario to showcase intelligence sharing through an ISAO for the sports industry. Colorado Springs, which is home to the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) and 23 sport federations known as National Governing Bodies (NGBs), was selected as the site of the POC.

The advantage of using a sports pathway to build communities of interest around threat intelligence sharing is that most of the larger American communities have a professional sports enterprise. In this way, the commercialization pathway toward advancing cyber threat intelligence and information sharing leverages sport to establish a viable model to extend an ISAO into the surrounding locality. This strategy gives the ISAO movement a significant catalyst for national adoption.

To advance an ecosystem strategy that complements a cyber threat intelligence and information sharing capability for the sports industry, the Sports ISAO created several projects to operate as ecosystem components:  Cyber Career Path and Scholarship, Workforce Development, and Private-Public Partnership.  These connected projects provide the means for a transition to community activism and cyber capacity building.   Finally, even during operations, the Sports ISAO learned of other features and components that would bring additional value to the Sports ISAO and members, as well as to the transition to the Cyber Marketplace approach for community capacity building.
