International Olympic Committee’s IT

It was revealed today by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that the Rio Games withstood one of the largest distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks from the past six months.  At its peak it was logged at 540 Mbps, with over 500 million cyber security events.  According to Kurt Marko, this was double the number from London in 2012; all designed to disrupt the event and steal information.

“The threats they prepared for didn’t only come from external attackers, but insiders and credentialed contractors. The risk wasn’t just service disruption, but Olympic brand reputation, data integrity and compliance with multinational privacy laws.”

The work of an Information Sharing and Analysis Organization (ISAO) is to work with target entities to help identify the source and motivation of the attacks.  Together we are stronger. 1330273739897613608
