Athletes Begin Arriving to Rio for the Olympics

Athletes for this year’s Olympics have begun to arrive in Rio.

The Irish boxing, gymnastic, and swimming teams were among the first athletes to arrive in Rio last week. The Team Ireland spokesman stated that the Irish are happy with their accommodations, and they have begun to train in Rio to prepare for the Games.[1]

The Australian swimming team also arrived in Rio. Brisbane tech millionaire Bevan Slattery donated $100,000 out of $300,000 to pay for the team’s flight on a private charter plane from Atlanta. Each swimmer had an entire row of seats to himself or herself. They have spent the past week at Auburn University in Alabama so that they could adjust to the time zone and do final preparations.[2]

On Friday, five members of the first-ever Refugee Olympic Team arrived. These track athletes come from South Sudan but currently live in Kenya. The two swimmers from Syria are already training in Rio, and the two judokas from the Democratic Republic of Congo are already based in Rio. The team is only waiting for the arrival of its Ethiopian marathon runner.[3]

The first Olympic horses also arrived in Rio on Saturday on the first of nine flights during the Olympics. Horses arrived from Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Japan, Italy, and China. The first horse to arrive was Team New Zealand’s Ringwood Skyboy. The horses arrived after a 12-hour flight from London. The 34 Eventing horses flew business class on a specially designed Emirates Boeing SkyCargo 777-F.[5]

Although many Olympians have arrived in Rio, there are still many more that need to arrive.
